Pickin' Pumpkins

So you’re looking for a good pumpkin this fall? Well, you’ve come to the right place, Pennsylvania, that is. And there’s no better way to pick the perfect pumpkin (say that three times fast!) than to bypass the supermarket and go right to the source. That’s right, hop on the back of a wagon and ride out to the middle of a real ol’ pumpkin patch.

All you’ll need are two strong arms and well, a few helpful pumpkin pickin’ tips:

  1. A ripe pumpkin is the right pumpkin. Make sure it’s orange all the way around. Check for scars and soft spots. If it’s green, leave it be.
  2. Check to see that it has a hard, strong stem. Then leave it on. Cut at the top and not at the base.
  3. When carrying back home, hold it from the bottom and secure it snugly in your car.
  4. Once you bring it home, keep it in a cool, dry place. If it looks extra cold, bring it inside. Be careful, frost will blemish your new buddy.
  5. And don’t wait till the last minute. Remember, the early bird not only gets the worm, it has more beautiful pumpkins to choose from!
  6. If you’re planning on painting or carving, pick a smooth pumpkin with a thin skin. If it’s the seeds you’re after, the bigger the pumpkin, the better.

Happy hunting!
